Update on imaging in rheumatology – recent advances

Abstract Imaging plays a vital role in the diagnosis and management of rheumatological disorders. While plain film radiography was traditionally primary investigative tool for arthropathies, bony changes seen on radiographs often occur late disease process. Therefore, imaging modalities that allow us to visualize earlier changes, such as synovitis, bone marrow oedema erosions, are favoured early monitoring. This update discusses novel techniques their applications within rheumatology, including following: dual-energy computed tomography (CT) gout detection oedema; high-resolution peripheral quantitative CT peri-articular damage; high field strength magnetic resonance imaging; positron emission investigate inflammatory arthropathies; potential artificial intelligence.
